Many of my images are envisioned after reading or writing poetry. This ketubah was inspired by W.H. Auden's verses:
Carry her over water,
And set her down under the tree
Where the culvers white all day and all night
And the winds from every quarter
Sing agreeably, agreeably of love
Put a ring on her finger and press her
Close to your heart,
While fish in the lake their snapshot take
And the frog, that sanguine singer,
Sing agreeably, agreeably, agreeably of love
After completing the painting, I then wrote:
Trees profusion
Lovers hidden
With secret dreams
My process begins first with mental images conjured from the poem read. The physical first step is an underpainting in one of several media as a base. Layers of color are then laminated in pastel on the surface of special paper. The under-colors glow through creating depth and interest. There is a flow of ideas from mind to hand to viewer.
