About Conservative Ketubah Texts

A ketubah text in the United States typically contains two portions: one in English and one in Hebrew or Aramaic. (Aramaic is the ancient language of the Talmud, which uses Hebrew characters but is actually a different language.)

Things to Keep in Mind as You Choose
Your Conservative Ketubah Text

At MP Artworks, you have the opportunity to choose:

  • both English and Aramaic or
  • just Aramaic.

Most couples will choose to have both English and Hebrew/Aramaic, but Israeli couples sometimes prefer to have the Hebrew-only text, since that is their native tongue. Some Interfaith couples select only English.

Most officiants affiliated with the Conservative movement of Judaism prefer a Conservative ketubah text, which is essentially the same traditional Aramaic text used by the Orthodox movement, plus the addition of the Lieberman Clause. (See below.)

The Aramaic portion of the text (read a sample translation here) fulfills the “legal” requirements of the ketubah, and you may also choose an English portion, if desired. Because of the traditional nature of the Aramaic portion (a loose translation can be found in the discussion of Orthodox texts), most couples choose to pair it with a more modern, egalitarian English text that reflects their mutual promises and commitments.

About the Lieberman Clause

The Lieberman Clause is a passage based on the wording of Rabbi Saul Lieberman, a professor at the Jewish Theological Seminary and considered by many to be a leading scholar of the 20th century.

In its current form, the clause reads (loosely translated): "And the Groom (name) and the Bride (name and appellation) agreed that if one of them were to contemplate or seek the termination of their marriage or if one of them were to terminate it in civil court, then either may summon the other to appear before the Beit Din (Court) of the Rabbinical Assembly and of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America or its designate or successor, and that both of them will abide by the decisions of this Beit Din in order that both may be able to live according to the rule of Torah."

Essentially, the Lieberman Clause attempts to create a legal remedy in the event one of the parties fails to cooperate in Jewish divorce proceedings. If the couple obtains a civil divorce, the clause requires the husband to give his wife a get (religious divorce) so both can remarry according to Jewish law.

Plus, for either ketubah line, you may choose to write your own English vows to be paired with the Traditional Aramaic text.
